Keyword stuffing is overloading a webpage with target keywords in an unnatural way. It might appear in visible content, meta tags, alt text, or hidden in the code.
Example of keyword-stuffed content: "Looking for a plumber in Exeter? Our Exeter plumber services are the best plumber Exeter has. Contact our Exeter plumber today."
Why People Did This
In the early days of search engines, keyword frequency heavily influenced rankings. More mentions often meant higher positions. Some marketers exploited this by stuffing pages with keywords regardless of readability.
Why It No Longer Works
Google has evolved significantly. Its algorithms now detect and penalise keyword stuffing. Pages that overuse keywords can be demoted in rankings or removed from search results entirely.
Beyond penalties, stuffed content drives visitors away. People recognise awkward, repetitive text and leave quickly, increasing bounce rates.
