Page Views

Definition

The total number of pages viewed on your website. If one person visits three pages, that counts as three page views.

What are Page Views?

A page view is counted each time a page on your website is loaded. If a visitor views your homepage, services page, and contact page, that's three page views.

Page Views vs Sessions vs Users

These metrics measure different things:

  • Page Views: Total pages loaded
  • Sessions: Visits to your website
  • Users: Individual people visiting

Example: 100 users make 150 sessions and view 500 pages.

Why Track Page Views?

Content Performance

Which pages are most viewed? Which are ignored?

Site Health

Sudden drops in page views might indicate problems.

Engagement

More page views per session often indicates engaged visitors.

Capacity Planning

High page view sites need appropriate hosting.

Page Views Per Session

Total page views รท number of sessions.

Higher numbers suggest:

  • Engaged visitors exploring your site
  • Good internal linking
  • Content that leads to more content

Lower numbers might indicate:

  • Visitors finding what they need quickly (not always bad)
  • Poor navigation or engagement
  • Content not compelling enough to explore

Unique Page Views

In analytics, "unique page views" counts each page once per session, even if viewed multiple times. If someone views the same page three times in one session, that's 3 page views but 1 unique page view.

Using Page View Data

  • Identify popular content (create more like it)
  • Find underperforming pages (improve or remove)
  • Understand user journeys (which pages lead where)
  • Measure campaign success (did visitors explore?)

Page views alone don't tell the whole story. Combine with other metrics like time on page, bounce rate, and conversions for complete insight.
