Title Tag

Definition

The HTML element that defines your page's title, shown in browser tabs and search results. One of the most important on-page SEO elements.

What is a Title Tag?

A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. It appears in three key places:

  1. Browser tabs
  2. Search engine results (the blue clickable headline)
  3. Social media shares

Why Title Tags Matter

SEO Impact

Title tags are one of the strongest on-page ranking factors. Including your target keyword in the title helps you rank for that term.

Click-Through Rate

Your title tag is the first thing people see in search results. A compelling title gets more clicks, even if you're not in position #1.

Writing Good Title Tags

Include Your Keyword

Put your main keyword near the beginning of the title.

Keep It Under 60 Characters

Google truncates longer titles. Aim for 50-60 characters.

Make It Compelling

Don't just stuff keywords. Write something people want to click.

Be Accurate

Clickbait titles that don't match content hurt your bounce rate and rankings.

Include Your Brand

Add your brand name at the end if space allows.

Examples

āœ… Good: "SEO Services in Devon | Get Found on Google"

Checking Your Titles

View your page source and look for <title> tags, or use browser developer tools. SEO plugins show character counts.
