Anchor Text Ratio
Definition
The distribution of different anchor text types in your backlink profile. A natural ratio includes varied anchors; too many exact-match anchors looks spammy.
What is Anchor Text Ratio?
Anchor text ratio describes the balance between different types of anchor text in your backlink profile. It measures what percentage of your links use exact keywords, brand names, generic phrases, or naked URLs.
A healthy anchor text ratio looks natural and varied, while an unnatural ratio – particularly too many exact-match keywords – can trigger Google penalties.
Types of Anchor Text
| Type | Example | Typical Natural % |
|---|---|---|
| Branded | "Pink Frog Studio" | 30-40% |
| Naked URL | "pinkfrog.studio" | 15-25% |
| Generic | "click here", "read more" | 15-20% |
| Partial match | "web design services" | 10-15% |
| Exact match | "SEO agency Exeter" | 1-5% |
| Related/LSI | "digital marketing help" | 5-10% |
Why Anchor Text Ratio Matters
Google's Penguin algorithm specifically targets manipulative link building, and unnatural anchor text is a major red flag.
If 50% of your links use the exact keyword you're trying to rank for, it's obvious you've been building links artificially. Natural link profiles have mostly branded and generic anchors because that's how people naturally link.
Signs of an Unhealthy Ratio
- Exact match anchors above 5-10%
- Very few branded anchors
- Little variety in anchor text
- Sudden spikes in keyword-rich anchors
Fixing Anchor Text Issues
You can't control how others link to you, but you can:
- Focus future link building on branded/natural anchors
- Disavow obviously spammy exact-match links
- Build more diverse links to dilute problematic anchors
