Conversion Rate

Definition

The percentage of website visitors who take a desired action, like making a purchase, filling out a form, or calling you. A key measure of website effectiveness.

What is Conversion Rate?

Conversion rate measures how many visitors actually do what you want them to do. If 100 people visit your site and 3 fill out your contact form, your conversion rate is 3%.

Why It Matters

Traffic means nothing if nobody takes action. A website with 1,000 visitors and a 1% conversion rate gets 10 leads. A website with 500 visitors and a 4% conversion rate gets 20 leads – double the results with half the traffic.

What Counts as a Conversion?

It depends on your goals:

  • E-commerce: Making a purchase
  • Service businesses: Filling out a contact form
  • Local businesses: Clicking to call
  • Content sites: Signing up for a newsletter

Average Conversion Rates

  • E-commerce: 2-3%
  • B2B websites: 2-5%
  • Landing pages: 5-15%

If you're below these, there's room to improve.

Improving Your Conversion Rate

  • Clear, compelling calls to action
  • Fast page load times
  • Mobile-friendly design
  • Trust signals (reviews, testimonials)
  • Simple forms (fewer fields = more completions)
  • Relevant, persuasive content
