Impressions

Definition

The number of times your ad, post, or search result was displayed to users. Impressions measure visibility, not engagement.

What are Impressions?

An impression is counted each time your content is displayed to a user. If your ad appears on 1,000 search results pages, that's 1,000 impressions โ€“ regardless of whether anyone clicked.

Impressions vs Clicks vs Reach

  • Impressions: Total displays (one person can see multiple times)
  • Clicks: Actual clicks on your content
  • Reach: Unique people who saw it

If 100 people each see your ad 3 times, that's:

  • 300 impressions
  • 100 reach

Where Impressions Are Used

Google Ads

How often your ads were shown in search results or on the display network.

Social Media

How often your posts appeared in feeds.

SEO

How often your search listings appeared (shown in Google Search Console).

Display Advertising

How many times banner ads were displayed.

Why Impressions Matter

Brand Awareness

Even without clicks, impressions build familiarity with your brand.

CTR Calculation

CTR = Clicks รท Impressions. You need impressions to measure click performance.

Budget Planning

High impressions with low clicks suggests messaging problems.

Share of Voice

Your impressions vs competitors' impressions.

Impression Quality

Not all impressions are equal:

  • Above-fold: More valuable than below-fold
  • Relevant audience: More valuable than random views
  • Viewable: Ad actually visible vs technically served

The Limitation

Impressions measure opportunity to see, not actual attention. Someone scrolling past your ad counts as an impression. Focus on impressions as one metric among many, not the primary goal.
