Sitemap

Definition

A file listing all your website's pages that helps search engines find and crawl your content. Usually submitted to Google through Search Console.

What is a Sitemap?

A sitemap is a file (usually XML) that lists all the important pages on your website. It helps search engines discover your content, especially pages that might be hard to find through normal crawling.

Types of Sitemaps

XML Sitemap

The technical version for search engines. Lists URLs with metadata like last update date and priority.

HTML Sitemap

A human-readable page listing all your site's pages. Useful for visitors but less common now.

Why Sitemaps Matter

Sitemaps help search engines:

  • Find new pages quickly
  • Discover pages with few internal links
  • Understand your site structure
  • Know when content was updated

When You Need a Sitemap

Essential if:

  • Your site is large (hundreds+ pages)
  • Pages have few internal links
  • Your site is new
  • You have lots of media content

Less critical if:

  • Small site (under 50 pages)
  • Strong internal linking
  • Simple structure

Creating a Sitemap

Most CMS platforms generate sitemaps automatically:

  • WordPress: Yoast SEO or built-in
  • Shopify: Automatic
  • Squarespace: Automatic
  • Custom sites: Various tools and plugins

Submitting to Google

  1. Go to Google Search Console
  2. Navigate to Sitemaps
  3. Enter your sitemap URL (usually yoursite.com/sitemap.xml)
  4. Click Submit

Google will then regularly check your sitemap for new content.
